“I’ve had to delve deeply into the underworld of my psyche in order to face my fears and come back to life.
My work is a celebration of the latent potential in every person and the tenacity that it takes for us to thrive”
Charley’s work focusses on themes of femininity, manifestation, rebirth and renewal. Her work is abstract and she deliberately works experimentally and with immediacy, welcoming the chance and chaos of fluid mediums. Dark pigments are offset by fleshy pastels. The watery forms are at once fragile and defiant. Her use of iridescence allows each work to catch and radiate its own light. Each painting is a gestation, labour and birth all of its own.
Charley studied at Chelsea College of Art and Wimbledon College of Art.
Her varied background of experiences include training and work as a theatrical set designer: winner of the IdeasTap National Graduate Award for Performance Design and exhibiting at London Design Festival 2013 / Sets for the Arcola and Saddlers Wells Lilyan Baliss Studio/ Director of a short play for the Almeida main stage.
In 2019 she was based in Arebyte studios in Belgravia where she exhibited her first solo exhibition from 24th-30th November.
She is currently working on a bold and confronting series of large scale figurative paintings addressing and re-telling the lost story of the Greek goddess Persephone as she journeys through the underworld.
